  • When Signs Collide

Description

My work investigates the urban and rural divide. I’m particularly interested in juxtaposing idyllic landscapes with urban signs (acoustic and visual). This ongoing fascination has embraced a number of mediums including photography, time-based installations and more recently screen-printing.  Indeed, I am currently working on a series of screen-prints which appropriate early London transport advertising posters.

Intrigued by Strucutralist and Post-Structuralist debates around the formation of ‘signs’ and cultural ‘myths’, most notably Derrida, my work considers how the act of art practice can be used in the visual ‘deconstruction’ of such ‘myths’.

The Keeper of the Estate (2009) reveals to the viewer the process behind fashioning a model urban or rural. While in collaboration with Rhod Walls The Gamekeeper (2010) takes this idea one step further, from a triptych to a single image.

Inspired by early twentieth century marketing of London’s suburbs my 2008 series metro/land presents a number of urban identities out of place in the countryside. I am currently in the process of adding to this series. While When Signs Collide (2006 & 2010) pastiches Constable paintings against a city soundtrack.

I studied photography at Central Saint Martins (Pg Cert) and Goldsmiths Colleges (MA), with support from the Arts & Humanities Research Council, and I have contributed to exhibitions at Down Stairs (2011), Charlie Dutton Gallery (2010), APT (2009) and Gooden Gallery, Vyner Street (2008). My work has also been used on marketing materials by the University of the Arts London.
