References to the Embarrassment of Riches combine with elements of Victorian decadence in order to inspire and inform Flett’s AW10 collection. Inspiration is drawn from the complex notion of mortality and aims to explore the ways in which, throughout history, we choose to remind ourselves of our predestined fate. With particular reference to 17th century Vanitas paintings (literally translated to mean ‘emptiness’ paintings) and Victorian mourning rituals, the collection attempts to explore the ephemeral nature of human existence. Traditional fabric manipulation techniques such as cutwork and drawn thread-work are expanded upon - then used to create surfaces that maintain a lace-like quality and naturally allude to the idea of fragility, which is at the very core of the collection.
