Justin M Crow

BA (Hons) Fine Art: Byam Shaw 2011

Central Saint Martins College of Arts & Design

Description

Justin Crow is an artist living and working in London, UK. To date he has exhibited at ‘Factory’ at the Proud Gallery, Camden, ‘Rebel’ at the Oak Bar, Green Lanes, as well as numerous other appearances at universities including Byam Shaw CSM & the University of East London. Most recently his work was selected to feature in an EU-sponsored film-development program for disadvantaged teenagers around the world produced by i2i Productions, which is forthcoming in 2011.

His work incorporates different media and has a strong relation to science-fiction. Whether alluding to the virtual, and conceptions of reality, or pointing ominously to a ‘MadMax’-esque dystopian future, this is a recurrent theme. Interested in notions of identity and constructed identity, he is elusive when it comes to explaining the impetus of his practice, preferring rather to take a back seat and allow the viewer the freedom to apply their own interpretations to what can be a diverse array of signifiers.

Throughout his oeuvre though there is a consistent return to a duality - of identity, protection & individualism v. society; and this is always underpinned by the most tedious and painstaking attention to precision and details that best finds its expression in his utilisation of mathematics, and the compulsive need to document and archive both his work and life.
