Description
My work hopes to interrogate the mechanics of functional and dysfunctional human relationships, whilst attempting not to succumb to sentimentality. Physical, emotional and psychological states are examined and visually re-assembled using performative self portraits, and objects acting as ‘props’ which gain expressive significance. The fusion of the exterior/scene and the interior/emotion is therefore key. Taking my work past mere self-solution, I acknowledge the ‘narcissism’ which is traditionally associated with and critically directed towards women who use their body in their art by depicting a range of social experiences. My work is from a specifically feminine perspective, and the political nature of the personal is an important touchstone which I seek to build upon. I aim to present a synthesis of personal and collective memory to engage with collisons of identity, deviant love and the human psyche through the surreal.
Recent exhibitions include participation in ongoing group show‘ Art in Mind’ at the The Brick Lane Gallery and at Highbury and Islington Tube Station with Art Below.
