Description
ASTURIAS, NATURAL PARADISE
You might never have heard this line before, but it has an autobiographical significance for me as it is the tourist slogan for my region.
Having to read it almost everywhere: at the bus stops, on road signs, in 3D magnets that moved every time I opened the fridge, I gradually stopped seeing it, I stopped paying attention, so it became part of the landscape and almost invisible to my eyes.
It took me some time to realize that the slogan “Asturias, Natural Paradise” was not actually addressed to tourists but to the very locals that put the signs up.
Perhaps under the influence of advertising campaigns such as this one, we, people from Asturias, are extremely proud of our landscapes. We might call it sparks of nationalism, I call it hallucination derived from overdose.
Because of my congenital illness, I try to combat any possible residue of nostalgia with other landscapes, something that Foucault called other places, heteropias*.
My perceptions, thoughts or impulses are hugely derived from other coordinates, natural hells, irrational fields, or any term which can possibly dislocate a given concept around a territory.
My practice is a series of trials for breaking into the tradition of scenery.
I have a stake in natural forces, moving images, sound interferences, or colour games, as they hold in their indefined core the bases for surrender. These qualities prompt a reanimation, or as Jonas Mekas would call “brief glimpses of beauty”. The beauty of paradise breaks in pieces, the everlasting land is hammered and we might look at a brief site.
