The oasis of culture and crafts: Rajasthan...
The purpose of this practice-based project was to contribute towards revival of local leather crafts of the state of Rajasthan, India.
Crafts define the culture of any place. With modernization, the use of handicrafts has experienced a slump making it necessary to revive the crafts with the help of design intervention.
As a handbag designer, Shivani Suhag wanted to incorporate local leather craft skills of Rajasthan in a contemporary fashion to develop a range of handbags under her label, ‘Avocadoe’. This collection was developed in collaboration with leather artisans of Rajasthan by exposing them to new materials and methods of utilizing their traditional craft techniques to develop art into functional quality products. The collection was aimed at encouraging the artisans to continue the practice of their craft skills and introducing them to the different possibilities of application of techniques.
