Allistair Covell is an award-winning British Contemporary Surface Designer with a background in fine art, printed textiles and fashion design. His unique and distinctive style extends across a variety of surfaces for the fashion and interior design industries.
Allistair trained at the University of the Arts London, graduating in 2012 with a BA Hons in Surface Design. His degree course not only nurtured his natural talent and affinity for colour and pattern, but also granted him the freedom to challenge and push boundaries, which has resulted in him creating a strong and diverse portfolio of work. Whilst at university Allistair interned at three prestigious London fashion houses, working with the fashion designers Matthew Williamson and Erdem, and the textile design icon Zandra Rhodes.
In January 2014 Allistair won the AfghanMade Best Young Designer Award at the internationally acclaimed Carpet Design Awards, held at the Domotex trade show in Hannover, Germany, for designing the surface pattern of a rug. This was Allistair’s first venture into designing for the carpet design industry and taking part in the process has exposed him to a new and exciting surface.
In 2015 Allistair is taking parting in the Cambrian Mountains Wool International Design and Make Challenge and has created 'Digital Stitch', a collaboration between Allistair and the print company Think Positive.
'Digital Stitch' is an innovative example of fusing the old with the new in a dynamic fashion as the richly coloured artwork is the result of combining traditional Welsh wool, weaving production techniques and the latest cutting edge digital printing technology. The surface pattern is a digitally printed photograph of an enlarged section of one of Allistair's hand stitched ‘paintings’ while the composition has been inspired by the chipped layers of the paint found on the hulls of abandoned wooden boats.
As part of the Challenge, 'Digital Stitch' features in the UK touring exhibition which will visit various venues around the country including the Hay Festival, The London Design Festival and Made by Hand: The Contemporary Craft Fair.
