My own project - Debutante - takes ‘ordinary normal’ women, especially at turning points or new beginnings in their lives, who could benefit from a moment of the glamour and attention that is found in celebrity culture. The women who appear here are depicted in a range of contemporary contexts across the spectrum of age, social and racial possibilities. Hence, I invert the idea of a celebrity as someone constructed by and for others: my inverted principle is that a woman can construct her own image through the story she wishes to tell setting her context in order to fulfil her own aims and be the observer of public response not just the observed. My photo biography collection offers both participants and observers a visual reading of transformations through personal story telling into new beginnings.
