Lorraine Smith is a researcher with a focus on twentieth century underwear and developments in textiles. Her Master’s dissertation covered technological changes to the bra in the UK, and the garments she purchased to help with this research were donated to the London College of Fashion Archives. Two pieces were loaned to the V&A for their exhibition Undressed: A Brief History of Underwear. Lorraine has presented her research at a number of academic conferences and as part of public programmes at the M&S Company Archive and the Victoria and Albert Museum. She is also a member of the team behind The Underpinnings Museum and, in 2017, curated an exhibition on technology and the bra, based on her Master's research.
