Winner of The Cordwainers Dato's JIMMY CHOO AWARD 2014 .

Simonetta Alejandra is an Argentinean footwear designer based in London. First she did her BA in Textile and Fashion Design in Argentina and later she specialized in the footwear field completing her Master degree in Fashion Footwear at London College of Fashion in 2014.
Alejandra is inspired by the innovative use of unconventional materials within the footwear industry. The mixture of colours and the essence of the materials that she experiments with are essential to create architectural designs that are turned into shoes. The balance between textures and colours and the simplicity of the overall image of her projects are a result of the combination between all of these elements. Organic and sculptural complex shapes are characteristics in her shoe designs.

PROJECT:EXTERNAL BONES

"Sculptural handmade designs that are turned into shoes"

External Bones was inspired by the relation between skeletons in nature and architecture. Skeletons are considered solid armours which function are support and have been perfectly designed and linked to the other parts of the "body" to accomplish their objective of performance like shelters.
This project deconstructs the internal bone of the shoe: the shank. By externalizing the shank of the shoe it means changing the traditional way of constructing the shoe and generates new aesthetics for the development of soles.

External bones refer to the idea of two layers shoes. In order to make a noticeable contrast between the exoskeleton and the body of the shoe, the external pieces were made with stainless steel which represent the shank of the shoe and thermoplastics from the prosthetic and orthotics industry. These rigid pieces are all handmade however laser cut technologies were required too. Ecological salmon fish skin from Chile( South America) was used in the uppers to express the organic look of the "organ of the shoe" versus the structural appearance of the exoskeletons.
