Description
“...It is the virtual insofar as it is actualised, in the course of being actualised, it is inseparable from the movement of its actualisation” G. Deleuze.
This virtual/actual dichotomy currently informs my practice. Moving between painting and a more installation based approach each strand is informed by an investigation into the virtual and its more profound roots.
This virtuality is referenced via tradional modernist iconographies broken down within the language of painting and synthesised with more contemporary notions of the virtual and digital media. Referencing 20th Century Vorticism, Hypersurfaces and cyberpunk literature enables me to formulate a discussion of Bergsonian Virtuality and its relation to a more recent discourse.
There is a strong theoretical research underpinning my practice which focuses on Bergson's multiplicities, the virtual as immancence and image affectivity, examining the relevance of Bergsons thinking to aspects of contemporary media centering around the digital image and 'interactive embodiment'.
Shortlisted for The 2011 GAM Gilbert de Botton Art Prize.
