Ya-Fan’s collection is entitled ‘Conflicting Love’ and reflects the expression of love– using 100% wool in a conservative palette of greys, beige, whites and black.
The concept of a modular design was applied in this project. Each section of materials symbolizes the protection and happiness we receive from our beloved family, friends, or lovers. The wearer is covered with these layers like a baby in his/her mother’s womb. On the other hand, each section of material also represents an individual, since each person is an individual in the world; because of love, we are friends and family members.
A chain is the bridge symbolizing love used to connect these individual sections together to form a garment. Also, small jump rings are applied to connect the chains and material together. The ring not only symbolizes love, but also the feeling of possession, which is like how our beloved ones give us love but also want to house our soul until the end of life and love.
Ya-Fan has deconstructed traditional tailoring to produce pieces that are intricately hooked together using chains replacing what would be the conventional seam.
This complicated construction gives the illusion of separate pieces – but in fact each one is one whole piece. These chains are not simply applied to the surface; they are part of the construction - a fitting metaphor for the relationship between humans.
